Reflection 1

I refer to this article titled ' TCM shops team up with animal welfare group to fight sale of animal parts' (http://news.asiaone.com/a1news/20070301_story18_1.html)
This article mainly talks about traditional Chinese medicine stalls displaying labels to show that they are not selling endangered species animal parts and any of such illegal products as part of Acres' (Animal Concerns & Education Society) campaign in trying to prevent the extinction of animals. This issue is about welfare of animals and fighting for their rights of existence. To me this issue is of great importance as in my eyes, i strongly believe that even animals themselves, have rights as they are also living things after all. Violating ones rights is immoral and is considered a crime if one violates another individual's rights in the human society. So if it is immoral to us human species, what more violating rights of the endangered bear species?
I think that this campaign that Acres had was really a meaningful one as it targets the most possible groups of harming endangered species, the traditional Chinese medicine. To be able to turn the biggest threat to being the biggest cooperative member of the campaign it is definitely having a big step forward and closer to achieving the desired goal of campaign. Also in the traditional Chinese medicine member's perspective, they could also benefit from it the campaign serves as a gentle reminder to them at all times that selling endangered animals is actually a crime. It hence ensures them that they are not committing crimes. In all, the campaign set up was simply a win-win situation for both the traditional Chinese medicine stores and Acres.
As a public member, as some shops are also fined for possessing such items. I thought this event also sent a clear warning of the consequences of the foolish act and hopefully it would clear up the evil and immoral thoughts of the other regular traffickers or customer to the gall bladders and bears' paws. If not a regular customer to such items, i also was educated of the existence of such items. Nourishing and supplementing bodies with herbs and medicines to boost our health and blood circulation is a good thing, but also at the same time sacrificing animals that are almost facing extinction to do so is also immoral. Put ourselves in the shoes of these innocent living things and think, if one day human race were to face extinction, yet some new smarter species is actually chopping you to a million pieces for its own benefits. Will you like it? I don't think so.

i'm glad that the ACRES talk impacted you that you actually talked about it. good call, since you're more informed about this issue.
gd that you talked about how they targeted the very group that could impact the sale of animal parts. however the ending's a little cheesy--will this sort of appeal to imagine themselves as poor little animals cause the general public to avoid buying parts?
could also reflect on why there's this culture in singapore--related to our multi-racial society where we're influenced by both our chinese roots and western influences?
